Event Mythical Coloring Event Winners

  • Staff
Due to the number of submissions and the fact that we ran two coloring pages, we are going to be choosing winners for each page separately, though people can only win once for the whole contest. There will be 3 winners for the Frightmare coloring page, and 5 for the White Stallion coloring page.

All of the following designs were chosen either for their color choices, their patterns or their overall look or feel.

Frightmare

First Place

Second Place

Third Place

White Stallion

First Place

Second Place

Third Place
We chose two for this placement, as it is done by the same artist, and we plan on using elements of both in one Dragon concept.

Fourth Place
Like with third place, we chose two separate winners but because it is different artists they will both get rewarded. We'll be using elements in one Dragon concept

Fifth Place

There are also a few honorable mentions that could not be selected again because they had already won once in either category.

If people want any feedback on why they didn't win, just ask. I would actually like to see more competition so it isn't always the same people winning (we were actually struggling so as to not double award someone).

We may also change things up so that it is more fair to those without an art background.

I don't enter to win...i just enter for fun :)
Which is why I choose coloring contests over others; it's a lower level of entry than a drawing contest, it allows people to be creative, and it also lets us get some design down to potentially release a coloring book with the pages at some point.

That said, the change in rules is more to cater to people who aren't semi-professional or professional artists. For example, if we did not limit just one spot being one by a single person, Predagirl and a few other artists could have taken multiple spots easily just by themselves, so it makes it harder to choose less intricate designs. I also want to make it so that people who do not do art for a living have a chance for at least one spot each contest, so that people do not feel that they have no reason for actually entering if they won't win (which is my main concern).

It was actually a toss up between yours and Moonlight Dancer for third place, and the final decision mostly came down to the fact that there was no Dark blue Mythical, and that there was the additional scale pattern to give emphasis to the Dragon.

You had some of my favorite gradients because there is just a smooth transition between colors. If you had worked in some pattern, texture or emphasis to the body you would likely have won.

It is very nice to see myself and my friend again in the winners on the white stallion. Admittedly, since some of the participants suggested a "canonical" version of the suit for the dragon, I had a dissonance in the form of " Wow. On the one hand, it is interesting and beautiful, but how it will look under all the filters in the game...", and began to experiment with colors) But, let it)
I still have one question. It seems to me that I didn't get the reward because I didn't have any diamonds credited in my inventory and history. Please check it out. :(
My friend got it all. And I had a bug, because of which I could not go to the profile. I contacted support and everything was fixed, but I didn't find any rewards.

You have the Diamonds, however there is a 'bug' where permissions of a category set to not be visible make it so that packages in that category are also not visible in the inventory. Once this current sale ends, you'll be able to see the package (during the time the exclusives are on the Market).

It's something I have brought up with the developer who does the cart software we use, and I'm hoping he can fix it soon. We are planning on moving to a different platform for purchasing Diamonds soon (same developer, but made for actual purchases and not a credit based system), and that will be easier to resolve.

As far as staying true to the game, or staying true to your concept... I would rather see something interesting and new, and someone who is trying to push boundaries in an interesting way and offer something new than just the same basic design over and over. If you are worried about how it looks in game, it doesn't matter as each Dragon is hand painted and made to look as good as we can get it by @Aiden. If something doesn't quite fit, we'll make adjustments and still try to stay true to the original concept.

I understood it all. Thanks a lot. I hope that everything will be corrected as soon as possible.

Hello everybody,

First of all, I would like to congratulate all artists, whether they are winners or not. :)
There are a lot of artist which are really talented and it doesn't matter if people do art for living or not.
And in general it's difficult to judge that, also not all artists have the same opportunities for such an event. :(

It's difficult to assess what the decisive points were, it might be useful to state how the decision was made. At the end, as far as I can evaluate the decisions, what counts is the taste of the jury. They like certain things or not, like in real life, even when it comes to art. As an example, there were some drawings that I liked more in terms of the idea and colour choice than mine or the other chosen. I think the Feedback from the community (comments) wasn't so much included as written, maybe this happened too little, to less comments i think.....

I participated, because it's one of the few dragon models that I like. It's a simple and close to the real.
About my picture, I can say that I asked various people (guild, alliance, friends) what they are actually missing in the game..... What isn't there yet and what they would like to see..... And maybe I understood the task differently when it was communicated, but it was also about presenting something new that isn't available yet... in terms of colour, ideas and history.....

Here the top 3 answers I received:
- a normal horse (look)
- something royal (maybe colours like blue / gold / red / violet)
- something legendary / mystical (I decided to make a background story)

I hope I was able to implement a lot for the people and maybe you will take some of it too. It's funny to stay on the same place as Corv, because I like his picture very much and I wanted to beat this one.... ;) After longer considerations about the ranking and Seiichi's feedback, I think that a combination of his horse and my armor would be certainly look even better... But no clue what your thoughts are... I'm curious what you will inherit from my picture/text. :)

Kind regards
Cerbi

So the three people who judged this time were myself, Aiden and Vipera.

Aiden: professional 3D modeler/texture artist, does all of our exclusive Dragon textures, obsessed with okapi.
Vipera: illustrator, does a lot of our illustrations and concept art (did both these coloring pages), horse & bunny lover
Myself: degree in 3D modeling (won't ever use it), web design, lover of gradients

Any contest judgement will be based on the opinion and tastes of a judge, though we mostly tried to be unbiased and there were times when one of us went with the other peoples choice because it fit better.

Here are the criteria we used, though not necessarily in any order:
  • Originality
  • Does this exist in some form in the game, and if it does is it different enough that it has a place
  • How much has the design been modified (texture/pattern)
  • Do the colors work well together
    • Has the armor been colored in, and does it fit or will it need adjustment
  • How possible is it to bring this into the game
  • Does the design have potential (meaning does it need adjustments)
  • Preference of the judges
While having a background story was neat to have, generally we do not pay attention to them in the decision process because not everyone does them, and they're not guaranteed to make it into the game (same goes for names).

Reason as to why we do not include feedback, and why I stated I would provide feedback on an individual basis is because some people do not take well to criticism and I'm known for being blunt and brutally honest. Also there are times in selecting submissions where we either cannot chose our first choice for a spot, or have to place something lower because of one reason or another (Yours and Corv were placed lower because we were rewarding both of you; last contest Heroine was placed lower because she knows the tastes of the judges).

Here's mostly why we selected winners this time though:

Frightmare
  • Hell Pony - we're planning on adjusting this and giving it more of a look similar to Samael, but in pony form. We get countless request of "do this dragon like Samael". It is also a very solid choice, has great contrast and details that do not detract from anything else, and those gradients .
  • Illusive Strike - literally chosen for how different it was from every other submission. It had good coloration, had a good pattern, and did much more than other submissions.
  • Moonlight Dancer - mostly chosen for the contrasting colors and small additions; it came down to this one Prince of Autumn, and the deciding factor was the additional details and the fact that these colors are not used for any Pony currently.
White Stallion
  • Shining Amethyst - this was chosen to be a dark, high emissive pony. It would be adjusted more for contrast as it's a bit too dark, but when put in game with a purple/pink emissive glow on the mane and tail, with additional changes it would stand out quite a bit and probably be one a lot of players like. In general darker textures, and models with purple or red are the more popular dragons in game.
  • Grim Stallion - it was between Furious Emperor and this one, as they are very close in design. Furious emperor couldn't be chosen because Jaslyn one a place for Frightmare. There have always been requests for a "Black Stallion", and we've always planned on one with red accents so this and Furious Emperor would make a good combination to bring out our previously planned design.
  • Cotton Candy & Night Stallion - this was different enough from Illusion Night that we wanted to try to make it work with some adjustments. We plan to adjust it and include Night Stallion's pattern to make it stand out more from other existing pony.
  • Skyhammer War Charger & Royal Destrier - Skyhammer War Charger is a better fit thematically, while yours was better for armor. Color wise we weren't able to decide which is better, and decided both needed some changes that the other submission had.
  • Afterglow - This one needs some changes to the blue used, and will likely be done with a gradient and some patterns to add contrast. The yellow to purple gradient/gradation also may be adjusted, but was also what made us ultimately choose it as if applied well to the armor it would stand out quite a bit.
These were basically the spark notes break down of the 60-90 minute meeting the three of us had. While some people will appreciate the critique, some will actually feel it diminishes their win because we do not always like or intend to do what they envisioned. And that is why we do not include it by default.

Hi Seiichi,

Not that someone get it wrong, but nobody should feel attacked or bad, it didn't seem obvious.
I think many people aren't so aware of the involved effort because many things aren't immediately apparent.

At this point many thanks for the detailed answer, which came fast and unexpectedly. :D
Also for the detailed information, who does what and what's his background that isn't a matter of course.
And in general, because not many would do these things with events, help with various problems or other things. :)
